Fresh facts emerged on Friday on how the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) uncovered at least, N1.85billion cash stashed in the home of a military contractor.
Although there are reports that the said house and office belong to a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd), a senior officer at the ICPC told Daily Trust Saturday that the house does not belong to the ex-army chief.
“I can confirm to you that our operatives raided the said property last week, June 16 and found over N1billion cash there.
“What I know is that the property, housing different exotic cars and cash, belongs to a contractor, K. Salam Construction or so, working closely with the military but not owned by the former army boss,’” the top official told Daily Trust Saturday.
The spokesperson of the ICPC, Mrs Azuka Ogugua, who also confirmed the raid on the property to our correspondent, explained that cash recovered by the commission was not up to N1.85bn. She said it was N175,706,500 and $220,965 only.
Ogugua also disclosed that the anti-graft agency recovered a 2022 edition of BMW and Mercedes Benz cars, G-Wagon; customised mobile phones; several designer wristwatches, including three Rolexes and some property documents.
The ICPC spokesperson said the commission had arrested the managing director of the company, Kabiru Sallau, adding that investigation is still ongoing.
Efforts to reach the military to confirm its relationship with the arrested contractor was not successful as calls to the mobile phone of the director, Defence Information, Major-General Jimmy Akpor did not connect.
In the same vein, the known phone contact of a former Chief of Army Staff, Buratai, was not reachable at the time of filing this report.
